Today I Picked up some of the 2018 LEGO Speed Champions sets

March 4, 2018 By GJBricks Leave a Comment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Went to one of the local Kmart’s today to collect the first of the new Lego Speed Champions 2018 sets for review. Been really looking forward to them since they were announced back in January, especially the Ford Fiesta – always enjoyed the WRC races – but the Mustang is cool! Also, these are the first Speed Champions sets I’ve purchased. Always been tempted, but never took the plunge till now.

First impressions were really good! The packaging is to Lego’s usual high standard and the boxes had a good weight to them. I don’t know about you, but personally I always find that quite reassuring, especially being a plastic toy.

The slightly stylised design of the cars themselves – mandated by the LEGO Bricks themselves – has always appealed to me. You can see the slightly distorted shape making them less streamline and taller than their reference vehicles. Reminds me of the car Caricatures that used to be popular – only much cooler in Lego form!

Picking them up from the shelves, my eldest’s eyes lit up! She couldn’t wait to get home and help me build them. And even my wife, who I’d warned I was getting them, thought they were superb (always a good sign!).

Looking at the details of the cars even on the boxes shows the level of effort and detail that the LEGO designers have put in. I especially liked the photo of the reference cars on the back.

Like I said before, I’m looking forward to the

Which LEGO Speed Champions sets

Today I went with:

  • LEGO 75884 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback
  • LEGO 75886 Ferrari 488 GT3 “Scuderia Corsa”
  • LEGO 75885 Ford Fiesta M-Sport WRC

3 classics and I intend to go back and pick up the 75887 Porsche 919 Hybrid set which wasn’t out on the shelves.

Stay tuned for my first ever review, coming soon!
