LEGO Sustainable Bricks will be launching in 2018

March 4, 2018 By GJBricks Leave a Comment

Reading Time: 2 minutes

LEGO has announced that it will be launching it’s first round of sustainable bricks in 2018. Appropriately, the first LEGO Sustainable Bricks to go under the Environmental umbrella will be some of the Botanical elements.

These new bricks are made out of the same material that goes into the green fuels for cars, Ethanol. Based on sugarcane, the new bricks are known as a plant-based plastic.

In doing this, Lego will start to full-fill a program that Jørgen Vig Knudstorp (CEO) announced back in 2015. This is a big step on an ambitious roadmap which sees the group migrating to completely sustainable bricks by 2030.

This news really excited me from the day they originally announced it. It is such a fantastic opportunity for LEGO to not only lead by example, but also create a legacy for the future generations of kids. And to it that will not compromise the greatness of the best toy ever created (big fan as you can tell).

As part of the program, they have partnered with WWF (the nature one) to support and build demand for this new plastic. Part of that has been to partner with their initiative, Bioplastic Feedstock Alliance (BFA). It’s great to see them looking at the supply chain beginning to end and ensuring the future demand for these materials won’t impact the sources. This goes the whole way through their supply chain according to their statement.

Will LEGO Sustainable Bricks Impact design?

In a word no. If it did, they’d look for another type of plastic. That was something they always made very clear from the offset being a company that prides itself on delivering the highest quality toys.

Until we actually have these bricks in our hands and hold them side by side with the originals, it’s hard to know for sure how accurate that claim is. But I have such a love for the product, as do their team, that I would find it hard to believe that they would compromise on some so important to them.

You can read more about the new bricks in the official press statement on the LEGO site.
