I am a big fan of the LEGO Creator Lighthouse Point set, but I felt it would make a good foundation for my first proper MOC (My Own Creation). This is Smugglers Cove Lighthouse.
The LEGO Creator Lighthouse Point (set 31051) is one of those sets that is absolutely perfect for expanding and making your own. I recently did a speed build of it that you can check out here. It really is a beautiful LEGO set!
It’s a really popular set in the LEGO MOC community and you will find a lot of examples of it around.
The sort of things that people have traditionally done is set it higher, build out the rocks, add a pier, etc. And they all look great and are an inspiration to look at!
One thing I do love though is when the designer is really trying to tell a story with the MOC, rather than just building something pretty – although that is cool too!
So for mine, I had a couple of criteria for building my first big LEGO MOC:
– I wanted the actual lighthouse tower to really stand out and shine so as to speak
– There were to be some subtle but odd features that looked out of place
– Have the innocent lighthouse keeper and his daughter be not quite what they seemed

Now I will confess, part of my decision ended up being due to the parts I had available, but others were as planned.
In the end, the lighthouse, as I wanted, is perched up high on a nice rocky outcrop with a worn LEGO staircase built into it. The drop is protected with a chain fence and there’s a small pier for mooring.
Inside the large lighthouse rock, our smugglers – or are they pirates feasting on the rich shipping lanes of Studsburg harbour? – have set up a base with an entrance that swings open.
The entrance is watched with a video camera and protected with a keypad. Not to mention you have to navigate some dangerous looking rock outcrops to get into the cove.
Around the rest of the island, there are normal goings on hiding what is going on. Looks like there’s some LEGO fish that have been caught. Will they get eaten or fed to the Whale?
The lighthouse itself is fairly standard except for some rather large and out of place satellite dishes. What are they running in there? A James Bond Evil Layer?
Let me know what you think along with suggestions when you’ve finished watching the video and don’t forget to like it!
