We finally have the LEGO City Trains for 2022, and I have to say there are some winners and losers here!
First off the ranks, and the biggest winner for me, we have set 60335 which is the new LEGO train station – we’ve not had a station for 4 years! And they’ve come back with an absolute beauty! It looks modern, filled with details such as a shop that continues the new city farm line (the supermarket, farm, market van and chicken coup). Plus, if that wasn’t enough we get one of the best looking buses LEGO has ever made. AND, if that’s still not enough there’s a track maintenance vehicle with a portaloo! Woohoo! I am so excited! Pricing for this is $129.99 AUD | $99.99 USD | 129.99 CAD | £69.99 GBP | 79,99 €
Next up is the 60336 freight train. For me, this is a love it and hate it set. I love that they’ve tried to do something different. They’ve packed in a good variety of carriages and the engine is modelled off a super modern freight train in the form of the Alstom Traxx locomotives – a very slick looking machine! But… I really feel they could have done a better job with the windscreens on it. It almost feels like the LEGO designers gave up at that point. As for the cargo, you get a car transporter (which is taller than the electric pick-ups on the engine – Sorry, but really?). A very cool wagon with a solar charger for the cars in it (an odd thing to put in a wagon as you’d usually use a flatbed for that). And finally some basic cargo. You do get a good chunk of train track which includes a junction and a ramp for offloading the cars. I think LEGO has done a good job in creating a great playset here, but as an adult fan I can pick too many holes in it, and tbh, I really wish we got a side build like the one found in the legendary LEGO Cargo Train 60052 set! Pricing for this is $299.99 AUD | $189.99 USD | 239.99 CAD | £159.99 | 179,99 €
And last, but by no means least, the new 60337 Passenger Train. This train is a beast and clearly takes some inspiration from the legendary Horizon Express as well as many of the new bullet train designs. The green sort of works for me and the engine looks awesome. You get two carriages (not a carriage and end train) both of which feature the new double door design. I will say that I’m not 100% sold on the design myself. Looking at the interior, it’s a great playset but a lot of compromises have been made to use those bases not to mention that the roofs don’t look finished to me. But, it’s a great looking set and good value for the amount that’s in it (those carriages are longer than traditional ones), a great range of minifigures including a wheelchair user, and I’m so happy to see the engine is back to being brick built! Well done LEGO! Pricing for this set is $249.99 AUD | $179.99 USD | 239.99 CAD | £129.99 | 149,99 €
In this video, I will give you my thoughts but I’d love to know yours in the comments!
