Video Tutorial to Upgrade the LEGO City Passenger Train with Jacobs bogies! 60197

September 6, 2018 By GJBricks Leave a Comment

Reading Time: 3 minutes

This LEGO tutorial will show you how to modify the 2018 LEGO Passenger Train 60197 to use Jacobs Bogies (and what they are). And there’s a high-speed train crash too.

note: This technique should work for all the LEGO City Passenger Trains.

This is the first of my LEGO Builder Tutorials where I will be showing you how to upgrade, modify or build many new additions for your LEGO Train and LEGO City setups.

First up, if you have any requests for builds or mods, please make sure to put them in the discussion section of the GJBricks YouTube Channel.

I recently filmed a video showing two Custom LEGO Passenger Trains running with Jacobs Bogies around the GJBricks Custom LEGO City. It’s an upgrade I’d been planning to make since the day I saw this slick new 2018 LEGO Train. And I’m very happy with how my modified LEGO Passenger Train 60197 looks!

What’s in the Video

As part of that video, some questions came up from my subscribers. So this video includes a bit of a Q&A, to begin with as well as some history as to what Jacobs Bogies are.

The first question that came up was asking what are Jacobs Bogies. And the 2nd was how do I do this myself? This video answers both of those questions!

To start with I’ll tell you a bit about what the Jacobs Bogie is, some of its histories, when it was created and what is so good about it for trains. Also, when and where it is used on real-world train systems.

Then I’ll show you how I translated that to work with the new 2018 LEGO City Passenger Train 60197. If you haven’t seen it previously, I reviewed this set. I loved it, but in my Lego Train review, I’ll go into more detail.

The LEGO Tutorial

This LEGO Tutorial shows you the parts you’ll need to do the upgrade and starts at 3:30. My how-to shows you how to build the bogie as well as some suggestions for things you can do make it custom for your own train. I also talk through why I made some of the design decisions.

And finally, let’s test it! I will confess that there is a train crash around 8 minutes into the video at around 8:20. You need to bank the corners to make it run at Power Functions system run at speed 10.

To finish the video out, there are more shots of my dual LEGO Train 60197 sets running around the city. There are a few new parts of the city you’ll see, but they’ll be coming in my next Custom LEGO City update.

Let me know what you think when you’ve finished watching the video, and if you’ve got suggestions or recommendations to upgrade the set further.

Don’t forget to like it and leave a comment to let me know what you think of the contents.

And if you haven’t already, subscribe the GJBricks LEGO Video YouTube Channel and turn on the “bell” to get the latest updates and see what I’ve been up to!

Thanks for watching!
